Zubia Willmann Robleda, PhD candidate at VID Specialized University and currently a researcher at the Centre for Intercultural Communication (SIK) in Stavanger, will be defending her PhD thesis called EVERYDAY NEGOTIATIONS. AGENCY AND STRUCTURE IN THE EVERYDAYLIFE OF WOMEN SEEKING ASYLUM IN NORWAY. With the desire to reveal a more nuanced picture of the experiences of asylum-seekers and the refugees, often portrayed as powerless victims of their circumstances, her thesis delves into the multiple ways in which women who have sought asylum in Norway negotiate the extensive structural limitations they come across in the process, and how they find avenues to enact their agency. For this, Zubia’s thesis draws on fieldwork in which over the course of about one and a half years (albeit interruptedly) she follows a group of women from their stay in Norwegian asylum centres and into the early stages of settling into a Norwegian municipality.
